About this card
Cards #601-616 are the sixteen three-player 1973 Rookies cards, each titled by position. A Rookies card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.
The story on this card
Jefferson was called up from Rochester on June 15, 1973, and made his debut at Fenway Park on June 23, pitching ten innings to beat Boston 2-1 and losing a shutout when Rico Petrocelli homered with two out in the ninth. He finished 6-5 with a 4.11 ERA. His rookie card is #604, a Rookie Pitchers card in the high-number fifth series, shared with Dennis O'Toole of the White Sox and Bob Strampe of the Tigers. Jesse Jefferson, a right-hander from Midlothian, Virginia, pitched for Baltimore, Chicago, Toronto, Pittsburgh and California from 1973 to 1981. He was an original 1977 Blue Jay and finished 39-81 with a 4.81 ERA.
O'Toole pitched in six games for the White Sox in 1973, working 16 innings with a 5.62 ERA. He struck out eight, and his last big-league appearance came on June 23. His rookie card is #604, a Rookie Pitchers trio in the fifth series, with Jesse Jefferson (printed with the Orioles) and Bob Strampe (printed with the Tigers); O'Toole is shown with the White Sox. #604 is a high number. Denny O'Toole was a White Sox reliever whose big-league work ran from a September 1969 debut to a June 1973 finish. He then pitched in the minors through 1975.
Strampe's debut came on May 10, 1972, when he relieved Ron Perranoski against the White Sox and gave up four hits, a walk and four earned runs before being pulled. Seven games that year for Detroit left him with an 11.57 ERA over 4 2/3 innings. Card #604 is the Rookie Pitchers card, with Strampe representing the Tigers beside Jesse Jefferson of the Orioles and Dennis O'Toole of the White Sox, a rookie card for all three. Bob Strampe was a right-handed pitcher from Janesville, Wisconsin, drafted by the Tigers in 1968 and used in relief for Detroit in 1972. Traded to the Padres in 1974, he later became an assistant high school baseball coach in Cheney, Washington.
