About Alan Closter

Closter's 1972 came to two Yankees relief appearances, 2 1/3 innings with an 11.57 ERA. Card #634 in the 1973 Topps set is a high number from the fifth series and lists him with New York. He was sent to Atlanta on September 5, 1973, in the Pat Dobson trade, and made four appearances for the Braves that year.

Alan Edward Closter, a left-handed pitcher born in Creighton, Nebraska, played four major league seasons between 1966 and 1973 for the Washington Senators, New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves, appearing in 21 games and going 2-2 with a 6.62 ERA. He played college baseball at Iowa State University and represented the United States as a pitcher at the 1964 Summer Olympics, where baseball was a demonstration sport. The Yankees signed him as an amateur free agent before the 1965 season, but the Cleveland Indians took him in that November's Rule 5 draft. The Senators purchased his contract the following April, and after a single major league appearance with Washington he was bought back by the Yankees in May 1966. He spent most of his career shuttling between the Yankees' Triple-A Syracuse affiliate and the majors, going 69-58 for Syracuse between 1968 and 1973, before finishing his playing days with Atlanta in 1973. After retiring he settled in Richmond, Virginia, and spent thirty years with Philip Morris International working on product development in Latin America. Syracuse inducted him into its Baseball Wall of Fame in 2006.
