1973 Topps #559 Barry Lersch

About Barry Lersch
Lersch worked 36 games for the 1972 Phillies, 8 of them starts, after a year in the rotation. He went 4-6 with a 3.04 ERA and threw three complete games. He struck out 48 in 100 2/3 innings. Card #559 is a fifth-series high number and pictures him with Philadelphia.
Barry Lersch was a right-handed pitcher from Denver, Colorado, who spent six seasons in the majors, 1969-1974, almost all of it with the Philadelphia Phillies. In the 1964 Midnight Sun Game he pitched a win over the host Alaska Goldpanners, a game that finished at 2:34 in the morning local time and is in the record books as one of the latest-ending games in amateur baseball history. He signed with the Phillies organization in December 1964. Lersch made his big-league debut on Opening Day 1969, giving up a walk-off two-run homer to Willie Smith in an eleven-inning loss at Wrigley Field. He worked mostly out of the bullpen over four full seasons with the Phillies, 1970-1973, finishing his career 18-32 with a 3.82 ERA in 169 games, including a two-hit shutout of the Montreal Expos on September 30, 1972. The Phillies traded him to the Atlanta Braves after the 1973 season; he closed out his career with a single 1974 appearance for the St. Louis Cardinals. Lersch died in Aurora, Colorado in 2009.
