About Dick Selma

Selma moved into the Phillies rotation in 1972, but a 1-6 record and 5.27 ERA in his ten starts returned him to the bullpen. A wisecrack aimed at the club's traveling secretary drew a punch that sent him sprawling into a luggage carousel at Newark Airport. His 1973 Topps #632 is a fifth-series high number. Philadelphia released him on May 8, 1973, and St. Louis signed him on May 21 and assigned him to Tulsa. A strong second half there led the California Angels to outbid the Chicago White Sox for him.

Dick Selma was a right-handed pitcher who spent ten seasons in the majors from 1965 to 1974 with the Mets, Padres, Cubs, Phillies, Angels and Brewers. Signed by the Mets out of Fresno City College in 1963, he debuted in September 1965 and threw a ten-inning shutout with 13 strikeouts in his second career start, a Mets franchise record at the time. San Diego took him in the 1968 expansion draft, and he started the Padres' first-ever game before an April 1969 trade sent him to the Cubs, where he led cheers from the Wrigley Field bullpen during the club's pennant chase. Philadelphia converted him into a closer in 1970, and he had his best season, matching a club record with 22 saves. He finished his career with a 42-54 record and 31 saves before retiring to coach in his hometown of Fresno. He died in 2001.
