1973 Topps #573 Fred Beene

About Fred Beene
Beene went 6-0 with a 1.68 ERA in 19 games, four of them starts. He struck out 49 in 91 innings, and opposing hitters batted .209 against him. He had feared the new designated hitter would cost him work and instead became one of the first long relievers. Card #573 is a high-number issue from the fifth series and shows the Yankees.
Fred Beene was a 5-foot-9, 155-pound right-handed reliever who pitched in the majors for the Orioles, Yankees and Indians between 1968 and 1975, finishing 12-7 with a 3.62 ERA and eight saves. Orioles scout Dee Phillips signed him out of Sam Houston State in 1964 for $6,000. At Elmira in 1965 he worked 12 relief innings to win a game that was then the longest in professional baseball history. Baltimore's deep staff kept him at Triple-A Rochester for years, where he won 46 games and was later inducted into the Rochester hall of fame. Baltimore dealt him to San Diego in December 1970, but an elbow injury sent him back to the Orioles in May 1971, and the Yankees acquired him from Baltimore for Dale Spier in January 1972. After retiring he scouted for the Milwaukee Brewers from 1981 to 2000, and one prospect he pushed the club to draft was Jim Morris.
