1973 Topps #431 Gerry Moses

About Gerry Moses
Moses caught 39 of his 52 games for the 1972 Indians. He hit .220 with four home runs and 14 RBI. On November 27, 1972, he was in the Caribbean as Cleveland's player representative when Marvin Miller told him he was a Yankee, part of a swap that sent Graig Nettles with him for John Ellis, Charlie Spikes, Rusty Torres and Jerry Kenney. His 1973 Topps card, #431 in the fourth series, shows him in Yankees colors.
Gerald Braheen Moses was a catcher from Yazoo City, Mississippi, . After earning high school All-America honors as a quarterback, he turned down a football scholarship from Alabama coach Paul "Bear" Bryant and signed with the Boston Red Sox for $50,000 in 1964. Bonus rules meant Boston had to keep him on the roster or expose him in the draft, so he spent three months with the 1965 Red Sox at age 18 and got four pinch-hit appearances before going back down. He caught two seasons at Pittsfield and one at Louisville, then returned for good in 1969, batting .304 in 53 games while sharing the job with Russ Gibson and Tom Satriano. In 1970 he was Boston's first-string catcher and an American League All-Star, though a split finger and other injuries held him to 92 games. That October the Red Sox sent him to California with Tony Conigliaro and Ray Jarvis, and from there he moved on through the Indians, Yankees, Tigers, Padres and White Sox until his nine-year career ended in 1975. He batted .251 with 25 home runs and 109 RBIs in 386 games. He later built a food-service business and spent decades on the Jimmy Fund and on benefits for former players, until his death in 2018.
