About Jerry Reuss

Reuss wears an Astros uniform on #446, a fourth-series card. His first Houston year, under manager Leo Durocher, brought a 9-13 record and 4.17 ERA with 174 strikeouts. Durocher later called him trouble in his 1975 autobiography, and Reuss answered that he started 40 games and threw 279 innings in 1973.

Jerry Reuss was a 6-foot-5 left-handed starter from St. Louis who pitched 22 seasons, 1969 to 1990, and won 220 games with a 3.64 ERA for the Cardinals, Astros, Pirates, Dodgers, Reds, Angels, White Sox and Brewers. He was an All-Star in 1975 and 1980, and won the 1980 game by striking out all three batters he faced. His 1980 season with the Dodgers brought an 18-6 record, a 2.51 ERA, a major-league-high six shutouts and a June 27 no-hitter against the Giants that fell one throwing error short of a perfect game. He was second to Steve Carlton in the Cy Young vote. In 1981 he beat Houston in the deciding Division Series game and won Game 5 of the World Series over Ron Guidry as the Dodgers beat the Yankees in six games. He later worked as a broadcaster, and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame (2016) and St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame (2019) inducted him.
