About Jim York

In 1973 York appeared in 41 games for Houston, all in relief, and struck out 22 in 53 innings. He went 3-4 with a 4.42 ERA and saved six games. His #546 is a high number from the fifth series and shows him with the Astros.

Jim York was a right-handed reliever who pitched for the Kansas City Royals, Houston Astros and New York Yankees between 1970 and 1976. A graduate of Norwalk High School in California, he played for UCLA in the 1969 College World Series alongside Chris Chambliss. His best season was 1971 with Kansas City, when he went 5-5 with a 2.89 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 93 1/3 innings, for a salary of $12,500. That year he also hit his only major-league home run, off Cleveland's Alan Foster. At the December 1971 Winter Meetings the Royals sent him and Lance Clemons to Houston for John Mayberry and minor-league infielder Dave Grangaard. He spent four seasons with the Astros before the Yankees used him in three games in 1976. After New York released him in August, he pitched for the Iowa Oaks in the White Sox organization and retired in 1978. His career line was 16-17 with a 3.79 ERA in 174 games.
