About this card

Fifteen of the 24 come in two printings. Thirteen include a Hall of Famer, among them coaches Ernie Banks (#81 Cubs), Warren Spahn (#449 Indians) and Bill Mazeroski (#517 Pirates), and the Dodgers' Walt Alston and Tom Lasorda (#569).
About Phillies Field Leaders (Danny Ozark / Carroll Beringer / Billy DeMars / Ray Rippelmeyer / Bobby Wine)
General manager Paul Owens hired Ozark after finishing the 1972 season as Philadelphia's interim manager following Frank Lucchesi's July dismissal. Ozark went 71-91, sixth in the NL East, in 1973. Fourth-series 1973 Topps #486 listed him with coaches Carroll Beringer, Billy DeMars, Ray Rippelmeyer and Bobby Wine. Manager of the Philadelphia Phillies from 1973 to 1979, Ozark won three straight NL East titles from 1976 to 1978 and lost the playoffs each time. He had coached the Dodgers under Walter Alston and returned to them as a coach in 1980.
Beringer finished his Dodgers coaching tenure in 1972. In 1973, he phoned Danny Ozark from Philadelphia's bullpen to report that he thought Ken Brett's ground-rule double was a homer. Topps' fourth-series Field Leaders card, #486, listed him with Ozark, Billy DeMars, Ray Rippelmeyer and Bobby Wine. Carroll Beringer pitched in the minor leagues before coaching the Dodgers and Phillies. His Fort Worth activities included membership in a basketball officials association and work to rebuild LaGrave Field.
The 1973 Phillies, DeMars's first club under manager Danny Ozark, finished 71-91, last in the NL East and 11 1/2 games behind the Mets. Rookie Mike Schmidt batted .196 with 136 strikeouts, and Steve Carlton, then the game's highest-paid pitcher, went 13-20. Card #486 is a fourth-series manager-and-coaches card that pairs Ozark with coaches Carroll Beringer, DeMars, Ray Rippelmeyer and Bobby Wine. Billy DeMars played 80 games, mostly at shortstop, for the Athletics and Browns between 1948 and 1951, then coached in the majors for 19 years, 13 of them with the Phillies, including their 1980 world championship club.
Philadelphia's pitching coach in 1972, Rippelmeyer was one of five finalists for the manager's job after that season. Ken Brett later recalled that Rippelmeyer left his mechanics alone during his 1973 season with the Phillies. Fourth-series Topps #486 listed Rippelmeyer with manager Danny Ozark and fellow coaches Carroll Beringer, Billy DeMars and Bobby Wine. A 6-foot-3 right-hander from the farm country around Valmeyer, Illinois, whose whole big league career fit into 18 games for the 1962 Senators - and who later coached the Phillies' pitching staff through three straight division titles.
Wine collected 4 hits for Montreal in 1972 and appeared at third base in 21 games. Paul Owens added him to Philadelphia's coaching staff that July. Fourth-series Topps card #486 groups him with manager Danny Ozark and coaches Carroll Beringer, Billy DeMars and Ray Rippelmeyer. Bobby Wine was the glove-first shortstop the Phillies and Expos leaned on between 1960 and 1972: a 1963 Gold Glove, the National League fielding lead at short in 1967, a record 137 double plays in 1970, and a .215 career average.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Data as of 2026-10-19. Half grades fold down for both graders (8.5→8); PSA qualified slabs (OC, ST, PD, MC and the like) are not counted. Where a grader registers a variation separately its population is listed under that variation; SGC slabs whose label names no variation are counted under 486a - No Gap In Border. A line marked “not listed separately” means that grader’s population report has no row of its own for that variation; it does not establish that no graded copies exist.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1973 Topps #486 card?
It is card #486 of the 660-card 1973 Topps Baseball set, picturing Danny Ozark, Carroll Beringer, Billy DeMars, Ray Rippelmeyer and Bobby Wine. Managers appear only on the 24 Field Leaders cards, one for each club: each pictures the manager with three or four of his coaches, and there is no solo manager card.
Is 1973 Topps #486 a rookie card?
Yes - #486 Phillies Field Leaders is a rookie card, one of the three Field Leaders cards among the set's sixty rookie cards (#421 Angels, #486 Phillies and #593 Royals).
Why is no PSA population shown for #486?
PSA's population report splits #486 Phillies Field Leaders by the coaches' background color, while the two printings tracked here differ in the borders of Danny Ozark's portrait and both have orange coach backgrounds; PSA's pale brown row is a third printing that is not one of the two. The color does not settle which printing a slab is, so PSA's figures for this card are not counted under either printing.
Does 1973 Topps #486 have variations?
Yes. Two states are catalogued and tracked individually: 486a - No Gap In Border (The black borders above and below Danny Ozark's portrait are unbroken - the corrected printing. A third printing with pale brown coach backgrounds is known but is not one of the two states tracked here) and 486b - Gaps In Top And Bottom Borders (Narrow gaps break the black borders above and below Danny Ozark's portrait - the error printing. The coach backgrounds are orange, as on the corrected printing). Owning any one of them fills the #486 slot; the master set counts each state.
How many cards are in the 1973 Topps Baseball set?
660 cards, tracked as 679 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 660 with none skipped, in five series of 132 - #1-132, #133-264, #265-396, #397-528 and the high numbers, #529-660, printed in lower quantities; 19 cards carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately - fifteen Field Leaders cards, the #20 Stan Bahnsen, #31 Buddy Bell and #504 Earl Williams border-gap pairs and the two #280 Al Kaline printings.
