About Adrian Garrett

Adrian Garrett hit .222 with 3 home runs in 36 games for the 1973 Cubs, six of them as a catcher. In 1974 he was 0-for-8 in 10 games before the Cubs sent him down, and that winter he led the Caribbean Series in home runs with Tigres de Aragua. His 1974 Topps card is #656, pictured with Chicago.

Henry Adrian Garrett, the oldest of three ballplaying brothers - younger brother Wayne later played on the Mets' 1969 and 1973 pennant winners - was born January 3, 1943, in Brooksville, Florida. The Milwaukee Braves signed him for a $35,000 bonus out of high school in 1961. His 'Smokey' nickname dates to 1963 in Austin, Texas, when teammate Walt Hriniak said he resembled pitcher Smoky Joe Wood; after Hriniak's serious 1964 car accident, the rest of the club also began using it as a show of support. Garrett played parts of eight major league seasons between 1966 and 1976 for the Braves, Cubs, Athletics and Angels, batting .185 with 11 home runs in 163 games. He hit more than 400 home runs in all, across the United States, Canada, Japan, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, and won four minor league home run titles. Tacoma inducted him into its baseball hall of fame in 1993. He later hit 102 home runs over three seasons (1977-79) for Japan's Hiroshima Toyo Carp, part of their 1979 Nippon Series championship club, then coached and managed in several major league farm systems.
