About Bernie Carbo

Carbo's first Boston season, 1974, produced a .249 average, 12 home runs and 61 RBI in 117 games as an outfielder and designated hitter, while the Red Sox led the division by seven games in late August and finished third. He then became the first Red Sox player to file for salary arbitration against Tom Yawkey, and the first to lose. His #621 shows him with Boston.

Bernie Carbo was a left-handed-hitting outfielder and designated hitter who played 12 major league seasons, 1969 to 1980, for the Reds, Cardinals, Red Sox, Brewers, Indians and Pirates. Cincinnati took him 16th overall in the first amateur draft in 1965, one round ahead of Johnny Bench's selection, and he reached the majors after Sparky Anderson moved him from third base to the outfield in the minors. He hit .310 with 21 home runs as a 1970 rookie and was named The Sporting News National League Rookie of the Year. In Game 6 of the 1975 World Series, his pinch-hit three-run homer off Rawly Eastwick tied the game 6-6 before Carlton Fisk won it in the twelfth; it was his second pinch homer of that Series, tying the record. The Red Sox inducted the homer into their Hall of Fame as a memorable moment in 2004. He finished with a .264 average and 96 home runs in 1,010 games. After baseball he founded Diamond Club Ministry in 1993 and managed the Pensacola Pelicans from 2003 to 2005.
