About Burt Hooton

A 7-11 record and a 4.80 ERA in 48 games, 21 of them starts, came as the Cubs finished last in their division. That winter Hooton pitched for Licey in the Dominican Republic, where manager Tommy Lasorda, a Dodgers coach, took notice and urged Los Angeles to trade for him. His #378 card shows him in a Cubs uniform.

Burt Hooton was a right-handed starter who pitched 15 seasons for the Cubs, Dodgers and Rangers, relying on a knuckle-curve he developed as a 14-year-old in Corpus Christi. A three-time All-American at the University of Texas, he went 35-3 for the Longhorns and was the second pick of the 1971 secondary draft, signing for $50,000. Chicago traded him to Los Angeles in May 1975, and he won his last 12 decisions that year, a Dodgers record. He won 19 games with a 2.71 ERA in 1978 and finished second to Gaylord Perry for the Cy Young Award. In 1981 he made his only All-Star team, posted a career-best 2.28 ERA and was NLCS MVP as the Dodgers won the World Series. He finished at 151-136 with a 3.38 ERA, then spent decades as a pitching coach, including with the Astros from 2000 to 2004.
