Danny Anderson Cater was born February 25, 1940, in Austin, Texas, and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies at age 18 in June 1958. He played twelve major league seasons, 1964-1975, for the Phillies, White Sox, Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Yankees, Red Sox and Cardinals, filling in at first base, third base and the outfield. He was the 1968 American League batting runner-up at .290, behind Carl Yastrzemski's .301, the lowest average ever to win a major league batting title, and led American League first basemen with a .995 fielding percentage that year.
