About Gene Hiser

Hiser's 1973 was his one full season in the majors: he played 100 games for the Cubs, 64 of them in the outfield, and hit .174. His 1974 Topps card is #452, printed with the Cubs. He spent most of 1974 back at Triple-A Wichita, where he hit .282 with 10 home runs. A September call-up to Chicago brought 12 games and a .235 average.

Gene Hiser was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who spent all five of his major league seasons, 1971 through 1975, with the Chicago Cubs. A Baltimore native, he played at the University of Maryland, was a Sporting News first-team All-American in 1970, and went to the Cubs as the 19th pick of that year's amateur draft. He played 206 major league games and hit .202 with one home run, dividing most of his years between Chicago and Triple-A, at Tacoma early on and then at Wichita. The Cubs sold him to the White Sox after 1975; he spent 1976 with their Iowa Triple-A club and was released at season's end. In 1977 he played professional slo-pitch softball for the Chicago Storm, managed by his former Cubs teammate Milt Pappas, and in 1978 he went through spring training with the Baltimore Orioles as a free agent before being released. After baseball he became an agent for Massachusetts Mutual Life in Chicago, and in 1983 he and fellow agent James Barrett founded the Barrett and Hiser Financial Group in Schaumburg, Illinois.
