1974 Topps #404 Jim Howarth

About Jim Howarth
Howarth's #404 followed a 1973 in which his playing time shrank to 98 plate appearances, his average fell to .200 and he played 33 games in the outfield. When the new season opened he went hitless in four at-bats as a pinch hitter and defensive replacement, and San Francisco sent him back to Phoenix. His last major-league game came on May 19, 1974. The card lists him as Jim Howarth.
Jim Howarth was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who played in 152 games for the San Francisco Giants over four seasons, 1971 through 1974. A Biloxi, Mississippi, native, he was an All-SEC center fielder at Mississippi State in 1968, his junior year, and the Giants picked him in the eighth round of the June 1968 draft. In 1971 he batted .363 in 110 games for Triple-A Phoenix, which earned a post-September 1 call-up to San Francisco, where he had three hits and three walks in seven games. He then spent the 1972 and 1973 seasons on the Giants' roster, and his big-league totals came to 49 hits and 16 runs batted in. After a knee injury and concussion in a collision at home plate in 1974, he decided to leave professional baseball. He went back to Biloxi and spent 41 years in banking before retiring in 2016.
