1974 Topps #399 Mike Paul

About Mike Paul
Paul pitched for the Texas Rangers in 1973 under first-year manager Whitey Herzog, then moved to the Chicago Cubs and finished 5-5 with a 4.68 ERA in 47 games. He had a 3.44 ERA in 11 games for the Cubs. His 1974 Topps card, #399, shows him with Chicago. The Cubs released him after two appearances in 1974, and his final major league game came on April 16.
Mike Paul was a left-handed pitcher from Detroit who grew up in Compton, California, and starred at Cerritos Junior College. A scholarship then brought him to the University of Arizona, where he helped lead the Wildcats to the 1966 College World Series. The Cleveland Indians drafted him in 1967, and less than a year later he debuted in the majors on May 27, 1968, earning a save in relief against the Twins. Paul spent parts of four seasons with Cleveland as a spot starter and long reliever before a December 1971 trade sent him to the Texas Rangers, where in 1972 he posted a career-low 2.17 ERA under manager Ted Williams. He later pitched for the Rangers and Chicago Cubs before finishing his major league career in 1974. After his playing days he became the Athletics' bullpen coach in 1987 and the Mariners' pitching coach in 1989, working with a young Randy Johnson in Seattle.
