1976 Topps #447 Gene Locklear

About Gene Locklear
Locklear spent the first half of 1976 with San Diego, where manager John McNamara used him almost entirely as a pinch-hitter. The Padres sent him to the Yankees for a player to be named later on July 10, and New York called him up from Syracuse on August 3. He hit .219 in 13 games for New York, mostly as designated hitter, and was left off the playoff roster in favor of Elliott Maddox. His 1976 Topps card, #447, pictures him with the Padres.
Gene Locklear was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who played for the Reds, Padres and Yankees from 1973 to 1977 and was the first member of the Lumbee people of Robeson County, North Carolina, to reach the majors. Signed by Cincinnati in 1969 as an undrafted free agent with no bonus after a tryout camp at Hope Mills, he won back-to-back minor-league batting titles, hitting .323 at Trois-Rivieres in 1971 and .325 at Indianapolis in 1972. In the majors he was mostly a pinch-hitter. He debuted on Opening Day 1973, went to San Diego in a June trade for Fred Norman, and hit .321 in 237 at-bats in 1975, his busiest season. He finished with a .274 average and 9 home runs in 292 games. He spent 1977 at Syracuse, where he hit four home runs in one game at Columbus, and played his last big-league game on October 2, 1977, going 3 for 5. He then played for the Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan in 1978. Locklear was also a professional painter, trained by correspondence course, and one of his paintings hung in the White House during Gerald Ford's presidency.
