About this card
Cards #472-479 and #487-494 are the sixteen four-player Rookie Prospects cards. A Rookie Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #472, #473, #474, #475, #487, #489, #491 and #493 at least one of the four had already appeared on one, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.
The story on this card
Asselstine played 83 games for Atlanta in 1977, 35 of them in the outfield, and hit .210 with four home runs and 17 RBI. His #479 is a Rookie Prospects card printed with the Braves, shared with Wayne Gross (Athletics), Sam Mejias (Expos) and Alvis Woods (Blue Jays), and is the rookie card of all four. Brian Asselstine, a Santa Barbara outfielder drafted 15th overall by Atlanta in 1973, played six seasons for the Braves from 1976 to 1981 and hit .254 with 12 home runs in 284 games.
Ten games with Oakland in 1976, beginning with his August 21 debut, gave Gross four hits in 18 at-bats and one RBI. His 1977 Topps #479 is the four-man Rookie Prospects card on which he is printed with the Athletics, beside Brian Asselstine (Atlanta Braves), Sam Mejias (Montreal Expos, though he had spent 1976 with the St. Louis Cardinals) and Alvis Woods (Toronto Blue Jays). Wayne Gross was a left-handed-hitting third baseman who played for Oakland from 1976 to 1983 and in 1986, with Baltimore in 1984-85. He was a 1977 American League All-Star as a rookie and finished with 121 home runs in 1,106 games.
Mejias arrived in Montreal after hitting .143 in 21 at bats for the 1976 Cardinals. In 1977 he played 74 games for the Expos, 56 of them in the outfield. He hit .228 with three home runs and eight RBI. His #479 is a Rookie Prospects card shared with Brian Asselstine of the Braves, Wayne Gross of the Athletics and Alvis Woods of the Blue Jays, and it is a rookie card for all four. Sam Mejias, a Dominican outfielder, played 1976-1981 for the Cardinals, Expos, Cubs and Reds, hitting .247 in 334 games. He later managed in the Reds system and coached first base for the Mariners and Orioles.
Toronto selected Woods in the 1976 expansion draft. Woods homered as a pinch hitter in his first major league at-bat during Toronto's inaugural game on April 7, 1977. His rookie card, #479 in the Rookie Prospects subset, listed him with the Blue Jays alongside Atlanta's Brian Asselstine, Oakland's Wayne Gross and Montreal's Sam Mejias. Alvis Woods was a left-handed outfielder for Toronto's first six seasons and later Minnesota. He hit 35 major league home runs and played for both Syracuse and Toledo in Triple-A.
