About this card

Cards #701-711 are the eleven four-player Rookie Prospects cards. A Rookie Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #702, #707, #708 and #711 one of the four is not a rookie, so those count for the other three only, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Hume hit his only major-league home run on June 15, 1977, off Philadelphia's Randy Lerch at Riverfront Stadium. He pitched in 14 games that season, including 5 starts. His rookie card was 1978 Topps #701, shared by Cincinnati's Hume, Montreal's Larry Landreth, Oakland's Steve McCatty and Detroit's Bruce Taylor. Tom Hume, the future Reds right-hander, threw complete games on consecutive days in Northeast High School's district tournament, striking out 31 batters and allowing 4 hits across the two games.

Montreal used Landreth in 4 games in 1977, including 1 start. He struck out 5 in 9 1/3 innings. His rookie appearance came on 1978 Topps Rookie Prospects #701, alongside Cincinnati's Tom Hume, Oakland's Steve McCatty and Detroit's Bruce Taylor, with Landreth identified as an Expo. Future Expos pitcher Larry Landreth visited Montreal with his family in 1972 and watched Bill Stoneman's second no-hitter as the Expos' guest. Landreth had attended an Expos tryout in Kitchener the previous year.

McCatty opened 1978 at Triple-A and was recalled to Oakland in June. His month-long stay included a seven-inning, two-hit relief outing behind Steve Renko in a loss to the Royals, and he finished with a 4.50 ERA over 20 innings in nine games before returning to the minors. His rookie card is #701, a Rookie Prospects four-player card he shares with Tom Hume of the Reds, Larry Landreth of the Expos and Bruce Taylor of the Tigers; McCatty is printed with the Athletics. Steve McCatty was an Oakland Athletics right-hander, 1977 to 1985. He won 14 games in 1980 and again in the strike-shortened 1981 season, when his 2.33 ERA led the American League and he finished second in the Cy Young vote. He later coached the Nationals.

Taylor's 19 relief appearances for Detroit in 1977 produced a 3.38 ERA and 2 saves. He represented the Tigers on rookie card #701 in 1978 Topps, sharing the Rookie Prospects card with Tom Hume of Cincinnati, Larry Landreth of Montreal and Steve McCatty of Oakland. Future Tigers reliever Bruce Taylor recorded 14 saves and struck out 101 batters in 101 innings for Double-A Trois-Rivieres in 1974. He also pitched for Triple-A Indianapolis that year, allowing 1 earned run in 15 innings.
