1978 Topps #593 Dave Skaggs

About Dave Skaggs
Rick Dempsey's absence for much of July and August gave Skaggs additional catching work in 1977. He batted .287 with 24 RBI in 80 games for Baltimore. His Orioles rookie card appeared the following year as #593 in 1978 Topps.
Dave Skaggs caught for Baltimore and California during a 4-season major league career. A North Torrance High School baseball player, he also played quarterback and middle linebacker until a broken ankle ended his senior football season. Baltimore selected him in the sixth round of the 1969 draft. Military reserve service kept him out of baseball in 1970; he returned with Stockton in 1971 and reached Triple-A Rochester in 1975. The Angels bought his contract in May 1980 after Brian Downing was injured. Skaggs homered and drove in 5 runs in his first game for California. After playing, he worked briefly as an Orioles instructor and scout, then joined his father in the plastering trade.
