1978 Topps #667 Jeff Byrd

About Jeff Byrd
Byrd's rookie card, #667, carries the Toronto Blue Jays. At the end of spring training in 1978, Toronto sent him to Triple-A Syracuse, and he complained that the minor league pay was less than he could earn in construction. He went 0-3 with an 8.13 ERA in seven starts there. When the club moved to send him to Double-A, he left the organization and worked at a construction site for the rest of the year.
Jeff Byrd was a right-handed pitcher whose major league career lasted one season, 1977, with the expansion Toronto Blue Jays. The Texas Rangers drafted him out of El Capitan High School in Lakeside, California, in the second round in 1974, and Toronto took him with the 21st pick of the November 1976 expansion draft. Called up in June 1977, he made his debut on June 20 against Cleveland at Exhibition Stadium at age 20, which made him the youngest pitcher to start a game for the Blue Jays. He won his first game in his fourth start, a 5-3 victory at Cleveland. He walked 7.0 batters per nine innings and lost his last nine starts. He finished 2-13 with a 6.18 ERA in 17 starts. Toronto released him on March 29, 1979, and he finished that summer 12-6 with a 2.98 ERA for San Jose in the Mariners system, the last season of his career.
