About Jerry Reuss

Reuss is pictured with Pittsburgh on #536. Shoulder trouble cut his 1978 to 23 games and 12 starts, a 3-2 record with a 4.90 ERA. Reuss said manager Chuck Tanner assured him he was in the plans as a starter, but he saw too few innings in spring 1979 and asked to be traded. The Pirates sent him to the Dodgers for Rick Rhoden.

Jerry Reuss was a 6-foot-5 left-handed starter from St. Louis who pitched 22 seasons, 1969 to 1990, and won 220 games with a 3.64 ERA for the Cardinals, Astros, Pirates, Dodgers, Reds, Angels, White Sox and Brewers. He was an All-Star in 1975 and 1980, and won the 1980 game by striking out all three batters he faced. His 1980 season with the Dodgers brought an 18-6 record, a 2.51 ERA, a major-league-high six shutouts and a June 27 no-hitter against the Giants that fell one throwing error short of a perfect game. He was second to Steve Carlton in the Cy Young vote. In 1981 he beat Houston in the deciding Division Series game and won Game 5 of the World Series over Ron Guidry as the Dodgers beat the Yankees in six games. He later worked as a broadcaster, and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame (2016) and St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame (2019) inducted him.
