About Tom Veryzer

In 1979 Veryzer figured in 90 double plays and set career highs with a .974 fielding percentage and 702 chances. At the plate he hit .220 with no home runs and 34 RBIs over 149 games. His #537 card names the Indians.

Tom Veryzer played 12 major league seasons, primarily at shortstop, for the Tigers, Indians, Mets and Cubs. Detroit chose him 11th overall in the 1971 draft out of Islip High School on Long Island. He debuted on August 14, 1973, with an RBI single in his first at-bat. He became Detroit's regular shortstop in 1975, and his two-out double in the ninth inning on June 8 broke up Ken Holtzman's no-hit bid at Oakland. On May 15, 1981, he fielded Alfredo Griffin's grounder for the first out of Len Barker's perfect game. Veryzer hit .241 with 14 home runs in 996 games. His only postseason at-bat came for the Cubs in the 1984 National League Championship Series. He was inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.
