1979 Topps #686 Ron Schueler

About Ron Schueler
Schueler's last playing season lasted eight games. He pitched 19 2/3 innings for the White Sox in 1979, going 0-1 with a 7.32 ERA, and his final game was on July 4. The coaching move that followed came after the illness and death of veteran instructor Fred Martin. Card #686 shows him with the White Sox.
Ron Schueler was a 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher who worked for the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox from 1972 to 1979. He started 86 of his 291 games, finishing 40-48 with a 4.08 ERA. He struck out 563 batters in 912 1/3 innings and saved 11 games. A Kansas native who pitched at Hays High School and Fort Hays State, he threw a no-hitter for Double-A Shreveport on September 7, 1970. He debuted on April 16, 1972, in relief against the Padres. Philadelphia moved him from the rotation to the bullpen after 1974, and he then pitched in the same role for the Twins and White Sox. He stopped playing at 31 to become White Sox pitching coach in 1979, then coached in Oakland and Pittsburgh, joined the Athletics front office, and served as White Sox general manager from 1991 to 2000, a tenure that included the 1993 division title.
