1979 Topps #636 Wayne Garland

About Wayne Garland
Garland returned in 1979 but had two more stints on the disabled list. He made 18 appearances, 14 of them starts, and finished 4-10. His 5.23 ERA came over 94 2/3 innings, compared with 29 2/3 in 1978. Card #636 shows him with the Indians.
Wayne Garland was a right-handed pitcher who spent nine seasons in the majors, 1973 to 1981, with the Baltimore Orioles and the Cleveland Indians, finishing 55-66 with a 3.89 ERA. A Nashville native, he was drafted by the Pirates in 1968 and the Cardinals in 1969 without signing before the Orioles took him in the 1969 secondary draft. He won 20 games and lost seven for Baltimore in 1976, then became one of the first free agents of the Seitz era and signed with the Indians. He turned to the knuckleball late in his career to work around shoulder injuries and was released after the 1981 season. He later coached in the minors, including as pitching coach for the Nashville Sounds and in the Pirates organization.
