1957 Topps #361 Curt Barclay

About Curt Barclay
Curtis Cordell "Curt" Barclay (August 22, 1931 - March 25, 1985) was a right-handed pitcher who played baseball and basketball at the University of Oregon before signing with the Giants in 1952. The 6-foot-3 righty reached the majors on April 21, 1957, joining the pitching staff of the final Giants team to represent New York before the franchise moved to San Francisco. His 1957 rookie season was easily his best: working in 37 games (28 as a starter), he went 9-9 with a 3.44 ERA that led all Giants starters and threw back-to-back shutouts over the Brooklyn Dodgers (August 6) and Philadelphia Phillies (August 11). A shoulder injury undercut the rest of his career, limiting him to part-time duty with San Francisco in 1958 and 1959; his final appearance came April 16, 1959. Over 44 big-league games he finished 10-9 with a 3.48 ERA, 73 strikeouts, and two shutouts. He died of cancer in Missoula, Montana, in 1985 at age 53. This 1957 Topps card (#361) is his rookie card.
