About Ed Fitzgerald
Edward Raymond Fitz Gerald was a right-handed catcher born May 21, 1924, in Santa Ynez, California. After serving in the U.S. Army in World War II, he signed in 1946 and debuted in the majors on April 19, 1948, with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He caught for the Pirates (1948-1953), the Washington Senators (1953-1959) and the Cleveland Indians (1959). On May 6, 1951, he caught Cliff Chambers' no-hitter, the first by a Pirate since 1907. His finest season came in 1954 with Washington, when he took over as starting catcher and hit .289 across 115 games. On June 27, 1958, as a Senator, he broke up Billy Pierce's bid for a perfect game with a two-out double in the ninth inning. Over 12 seasons and 807 games he batted .260 with 19 home runs and 217 RBIs, later working as an American League bullpen coach and a minor-league manager.
