1958 Topps #301 Randy Jackson

About Randy Jackson
Jackson's 1958 Topps #301 shows him with the Los Angeles Dodgers, in Series Four of the 494-card set. He was in his third year with the club, after a 1956 season in which he went hitless in three pinch-hit at-bats in the World Series and a 1957 knee injury that ended his run as a regular. He played 64 games in 1958, split between the Dodgers and the Cleveland Indians, and hit .218 with five home runs and 17 RBI.
Ransom Joseph Jackson, known as Randy and nicknamed Handsome Ransom, was a right-handed third baseman born in Little Rock, Arkansas, who played ten major league seasons between 1950 and 1959. A star at Texas Christian and Texas, where he won three straight Southwest Conference batting titles, he signed with the Cubs in 1947 after a Wrigley Field tryout. He took over at third base in 1951 and held it through 1955, hitting 16 to 21 home runs in most of those seasons and making the National League All-Star team in 1954 and 1955. The Dodgers traded for him after 1955 to succeed Jackie Robinson, and he hit .274 with eight home runs in 1956, then went hitless in three pinch-hit at-bats in the World Series. A major knee injury in 1957 ended his run as a regular. He finished with the Indians and a brief return to the Cubs, with 103 home runs and a .261 average, and died in 2019. A 2016 memoir told his story.
