About Ralph Terry

Three 1963 Topps cards carry Terry's big 1962 numbers. Two are first-series League Leaders: #8, the 1962 American League Pitching Leaders, alongside Dick Donovan, Ray Herbert, Camilo Pascual and Hall of Famer Jim Bunning; and #10, the 1962 American League Strikeout Leaders, alongside Pascual, Bunning, Juan Pizarro and Jim Kaat, who joined Bunning in Cooperstown with the class of 2022. His own card, #315, is a fourth-series issue. The 1963 season itself was a grinding one: 17-15 with a 3.22 ERA in 40 games, 37 of them starts, a career-high 18 complete games, then three innings of relief as the Dodgers swept the Yankees in the World Series.

Ralph Terry, a right-handed pitcher from Big Cabin, Oklahoma, spent twelve big-league seasons (1956-1967) with the Yankees, Kansas City Athletics, Cleveland Indians and Mets, finishing 107-99 with a 3.62 ERA, 75 complete games, 20 shutouts and exactly 1,000 strikeouts. The Yankees signed him in November 1953, months after he graduated as salutatorian at Chelsea High School in Oklahoma; a detour to Kansas City took him away in 1957, and he was back in New York by 1959 to pitch through five straight pennants from 1960 to 1964. His signature moment came in Game Seven of the 1962 World Series, when he threw a complete-game 1-0 shutout at Candlestick Park against the Giants, the contest ending on Bobby Richardson's catch of Willie McCovey's line drive; he was named World Series MVP after also winning Game Five. It was redemption of a sort - two years earlier he had surrendered Bill Mazeroski's Game Seven walk-off home run that gave Pittsburgh the 1960 title. He was never elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, though he belongs to both the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. After baseball he turned professional golfer, won the 1980 Midwest PGA Championship and later played the Senior PGA Tour. He died in Larned, Kansas, in March 2022 at 86.
