About this card

This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.

The story on this card

McCabe made his major league debut with the Minnesota Twins on April 18, 1964, appearing behind the plate in 12 of his 14 games that season. Card #564 is a Rookie Stars multi-player card from the high-number series, pairing him with catcher Jerry McNertney of the Chicago White Sox. That October, Minnesota traded McCabe to the expansion Washington Senators for catcher Ken Retzer. Purdue-bred catcher who set a Pacific Coast League hitting-streak record in the minors before a brief big-league stop, then flew commercial airliners for decades afterward.

McNertney made his major league debut with the Chicago White Sox in 1964 at age 27, appearing in 73 games and hitting .215 with 3 home runs. His 1964 Topps card, #564, is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue from the series 7 high-number run, shared with Joe McCabe. A converted first baseman turned catcher, he broke in with the 1964 White Sox and later anchored the Seattle Pilots' lone season behind the plate.
