1965 Topps #582 Bob Schmidt

About Bob Schmidt
Card #582 is a high number out of the seventh series, and TCDB, Cardsmiths and BaseballCardPedia all list it among that run's short prints. It puts him with the Yankees, two years after Washington sold him to New York, and the gap in between shows: he spent 1964 out of the majors and drew no Topps card that year. New York used him 20 times in 1965, 10 hits in 40 at-bats for a .250 average with one home run. His last big league appearance came on June 8, 1965, and this is the only card that ever pictured him as a Yankee.
Bob Schmidt was a right-handed catcher from St. Louis who signed with the New York Giants organization in 1951 and climbed the farm system the slow way, losing the 1953 and 1954 seasons to military service before taking all-star honors behind the plate in the Double-A Texas League in 1956 and the Triple-A American Association in 1957. He debuted with the San Francisco Giants on April 16, 1958, and gave that rookie year three things worth keeping: 14 home runs, a National League All-Star selection, and a major league record 22 putouts by a catcher in a 14-inning game on June 22. Two months later, on August 31, he drove in six runs against Sandy Koufax, starting with a first-inning grand slam. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, he was carried for his glove as the bat cooled, leading American League catchers in fielding percentage in 1962 and finishing with a .988 career mark. Over seven seasons with the Giants, Reds, Senators and Yankees he played 454 games and batted .243 with 317 hits, 39 home runs and 150 RBI. He died in 2015 at 82.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1965 Topps #582 card?
It is card #582 of the 598-card 1965 Topps Baseball set, picturing Bob Schmidt of the New York Yankees.
Is 1965 Topps #582 a scarce card?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last series, #507-598. Unlike most 1960s Topps sets the 1965 highs are not scarce as a run - the premium sits on the short-printed cards inside #523-598. It is also a short-print zone card. Forty-four of the 76 cards in #523-598 were short-printed; #507-522 was not. The zone is stated as a range because the catalogs disagree on exactly which cards, so no single card is marked.
How many cards are in the 1965 Topps Baseball set?
598 cards, tracked as 600 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps and no printed-number collisions, and two checklist cards - #79 and #508 - carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
