About Hector Lopez
#532 is a high number from the seventh series of the 1965 Topps set, inside its short-print zone. It reports on 1964, when he batted .260 in 127 games with 10 homers and 34 RBIs, his last double-digit home run season. The Yankees edged Chicago by a game for a fifth straight pennant under new manager Yogi Berra, then lost to St. Louis in seven. Lopez played three games, went 0-for-2 pinch-hitting, and never appeared in another World Series.
Hector Headley Lopez Swainson, born July 8, 1929, in Colon, Panama, was a third baseman and outfielder who played twelve major league seasons with the Kansas City Athletics and New York Yankees from 1955 to 1966. The son of a pitcher, he signed out of Panama with a Quebec club in the Class C Provincial League and reached the Athletics organization from there. He became Kansas City's regular third baseman, a right-handed batter who hit to all fields with good power even as he led American League third basemen in errors. Traded to New York in May 1959, he handled all four infield and all three outfield positions over his career and settled in as the Yankees' third outfielder behind Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. Nicknamed "Hector the Hit Collector" by writer George Vecsey, he batted .269 with 136 home runs and 591 RBIs, played on five straight pennant winners and two World Series champions, and later became the first Black manager of a Triple-A club, piloting the Buffalo Bisons in 1969. He died September 29, 2022, at 93.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1965 Topps #532 card?
It is card #532 of the 598-card 1965 Topps Baseball set, picturing Hector Lopez of the New York Yankees.
Does 1965 Topps #532 have an error?
Back gives Lopez's birth year as 1932, should be 1929. It was never corrected, so there is no variation to chase - every copy of #532 reads the same way.
Is 1965 Topps #532 a scarce card?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last series, #507-598. Unlike most 1960s Topps sets the 1965 highs are not scarce as a run - the premium sits on the short-printed cards inside #523-598. It is also a short-print zone card. Forty-four of the 76 cards in #523-598 were short-printed; #507-522 was not. The zone is stated as a range because the catalogs disagree on exactly which cards, so no single card is marked.

598 cards, tracked as 600 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps and no printed-number collisions, and two checklist cards - #79 and #508 - carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
