The story on this card
Jimenez had made his lone major league appearance for the Yankees the previous October, going 2-for-6 in a start against Cleveland. This 1965 Topps Rookie Stars card, shared with fellow Yankees farmhand Jake Gibbs, introduced him to collectors as New York looked to its next wave of outfield depth. He spent the 1965 season himself back in the minors, batting .297 for Toledo before the Yankees outrighted him that fall. Dominican outfielder who batted .333 in his only major-league game for the 1964 Yankees, then spent years starring in Triple-A before becoming a scout back home in the Dominican Republic.
'Yankees 1965 Rookie Stars,' card #226 in the third series, teams Gibbs with outfielder Elvio Jimenez. The 1964 line on the back is a three-game, six-at-bat, one-hit cameo wrapped around a fourth straight year in the minors, and broken fingers kept him out of that October's World Series. At 26 he was a rookie in name only, and this was the last Topps card to bill him as one. Jake Gibbs was Ole Miss's All-America quarterback and the 1961 Sugar Bowl MVP, who passed up pro football for a six-figure Yankees bonus, caught in the Bronx from 1962 to 1971, and went home to coach the Rebels' baseball team for 19 seasons.
