1967 Topps #368 Jack Hiatt

About Jack Hiatt
1967 Topps #368, from the set's fourth print series, is a solo card showing Hiatt with the San Francisco Giants. That season he logged his most playing time to date, seeing the bulk of it at first base with a handful of games behind the plate as part of the Giants' bench mix.
Jack Hiatt was a catcher who broke in with the Los Angeles Angels in September 1964 before settling in with the San Francisco Giants, where he spent the bulk of his nine big league seasons. Signed as an undrafted free agent out of Los Angeles Pierce College, he split his defensive work between catcher and first base, backing up Tom Haller and later Dick Dietz. His most productive stretch came in April 1969, when a hand injury sidelined Dietz and Hiatt stepped into the lineup, homering twice and driving in seven runs in a 13-inning win over Houston that included a walk-off grand slam. Giants manager Clyde King praised his work handling pitches in the dirt. After 1969 his playing time faded; he closed his career with Montreal, the Cubs, Houston and the Angels through 1972. He went on to manage in the minors for four organizations and later spent sixteen years as the Giants' director of player development.
