1970 Topps #325 Dave Boswell

About Dave Boswell
Boswell shared the American League wins leaders card, #70 in the first series of the 1970 Topps set, with Denny McLain, Mike Cuellar, Dave McNally, Jim Perry and Mel Stottlemyre. His own #325, from the third series, is a Twins card. His 1969 season began with a scare, when he sliced two tendons on his left hand while cleaning a fish during spring training. He made 38 starts, completed 10 and struck out 190. On July 14 he pitched a career-high 12 innings in a no-decision against the Chicago White Sox.
Dave Boswell was a hard-throwing right-hander who debuted with the Minnesota Twins in 1964 at age 19 and spent eight major league seasons, all in the American League, with the Twins, Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles. He averaged 14 wins and over 200 innings across a four-year stretch from 1966 to 1969, leading the AL in winning percentage in 1966 and winning a career-high 20 games in 1969, when Minnesota captured the first AL West title. Boswell pitched for the pennant-winning 1965 Twins in their World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He started Game Two of the 1969 ALCS against Baltimore, a 1-0 loss in 11 innings in which he hurt his arm, an injury he later called career-ending. That season he also fought teammate Bob Allison and manager Billy Martin outside a Detroit bar. Boswell batted .202 for his career and finished in 1971 with a 68-56 record and 3.52 ERA. He died in 2012 at age 67.
