1970 Topps #528 Elrod Hendricks

About Elrod Hendricks
Elrod Hendricks' #528 is a fifth-series card showing him with the Orioles. He caught Jim Palmer's no-hitter against Oakland on August 13, 1969. In that postseason he went 2-for-8 with three RBI in the ALCS sweep of Minnesota and 1-for-10 in the World Series loss to the Mets, where Pete Richert ran him off J.C. Martin's bunt in Game 4.
Elrod Hendricks was a catcher from Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands, who spent twelve major league seasons from 1968 to 1979, mostly with the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles selected him from the California Angels in the 1967 Rule 5 draft. He shared catching duty with Andy Etchebarren on three straight American League pennant winners from 1969 to 1971, including the 1970 World Series champions. Regarded as a strong defensive catcher, he worked effectively with Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar, Dave McNally and Pat Dobson. He also played for the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees before returning to Baltimore, hitting .220 with 62 home runs across 711 career games. His most productive year at the plate came in 1970, when he drove in 41 runs and then hit .364 with a home run in that year's World Series win over Cincinnati. He became the Orioles' bullpen coach in 1978 and held the job for 28 years, the longest coaching tenure in franchise history.
