About Mark Belanger

Charlie Lau tracked every pitch Belanger saw in 1969 and coached him on when to swing and what to expect. Belanger batted .287 with 50 RBI and 76 runs. He went 3-for-15 against the Mets in the World Series. His 1970 Orioles card, #615, came in the sixth series.

Mark Belanger spent 17 seasons with Baltimore and one with the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning eight Gold Gloves at shortstop and a World Series championship with the 1970 Orioles. His tall, narrow frame earned him the nickname The Blade. Baltimore signed him out of Pittsfield High School in 1962 for $35,000, and he reached the majors as a pinch-runner on August 7, 1965. Across 18 seasons he collected 1,316 hits and batted .228. He served as the Orioles' player representative, took part in the 1981 strike negotiations and worked for the players' association after retiring. Baltimore inducted him into its team Hall of Fame in 1983.
