The story on this card
Gamble shares Rookie Stars card #654, a high number from the seventh series, with Boots Day and Angel Mangual, a rookie card for all three. Gamble is printed with the Phillies, Day with the Cubs and Mangual with the Pirates. Gamble debuted with the Cubs on August 27, 1969, and hit .225 in 24 games. In 1970 he hit .262 in 88 games for Philadelphia, and his 10th-inning single on October 1 scored the winning run in the last game at Connie Mack Stadium. Oscar Gamble was a left-handed outfielder and DH with 200 home runs over 17 seasons for seven clubs. He hit a career-high 31 for the 1977 White Sox, and the large Afro under his cap became one of the defining images of 1970s baseball.
Day made the Cubs' opening day roster in 1970 and played 11 games before the May trade to Montreal. Recalled by the Expos from Triple-A, he hit .269 in 41 games, and he finished at .267 over 52 games between the two clubs. His #654 Rookie Stars card, a high number from the seventh series, is the rookie card for all three men on it: Oscar Gamble (printed with the Phillies), Day (printed with the Cubs) and Angel Mangual (printed with the Pirates). Left-handed outfielder who played 1969-74 for the Cardinals, Cubs and Expos, mostly as Montreal's platoon center fielder. He hit .256 in 471 games and spent 55 years in professional baseball as a player, coach, scout and manager.
Mangual's 1970 Rookie Stars card, #654 a high number from the seventh series, lists him with the Pirates and pairs him with Oscar Gamble (Phillies) and Boots Day (Cubs). The Pirates had called him up in September 1969 for 6 games and 4 at-bats, one a double. He signed late, was the last outfielder cut in spring camp, and spent 1970 at Triple-A Columbus, hitting .281 with 20 home runs and 87 RBIs. Puerto Rican outfielder called "Little Clemente" who played for Pittsburgh in 1969 and Oakland from 1971 to 1976. He hit .286 as a 1971 rookie, won three World Series rings, and ended Game 4 of the 1972 Series with a ninth-inning pinch single.
