1970 Topps #655 John Roseboro

About John Roseboro
Roseboro's seventh-series Topps #655 was a Washington Senators high number. He had gone 1-for-5 in the 1969 American League Championship Series, when Baltimore swept Minnesota in three games. With Washington in 1970, he batted .233 with one home run in 46 games and made his final major league appearance on August 11 at age 37.
John Roseboro caught in the major leagues from 1957 through 1970, primarily for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. Born May 13, 1933, in Ashland, Ohio, he signed with Brooklyn in 1952. He succeeded Roy Campanella as the Dodgers' regular catcher in 1958 after a car accident ended Campanella's career, and held the job through 1967. A four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, Roseboro caught four Dodgers pennant winners and three championship teams. Sandy Koufax said that with Roseboro catching, he never felt alone. His quiet manner earned him the nickname Gabby. Roseboro finished his playing career with Minnesota and Washington, compiling a .249 average in 1,585 games. He hit 104 home runs and drove in 548 runs. In 1978, he published the memoir Glory Days with the Dodgers, and Other Days with Others, written with Bill Libby. He died in Los Angeles on August 16, 2002.
