1971 Topps #396 Dick Schofield

About Dick Schofield
Eddie Kasko took over the Red Sox in 1970, and Schofield played little in the field under him, batting .187 in 76 games and 7-for-43 as a pinch hitter. That October Boston traded him back to St. Louis for Jim Campbell, and Topps #396 has him with the Cardinals. Back in St. Louis, he hit the last of his 21 career home runs before a July 29 trade sent him to Milwaukee with Jose Cardenal. His last game was a 2-1 loss at Chicago on September 30, 1971.
John Richard "Ducky" Schofield built a 19-year major-league career as a switch-hitting infielder. He broke in with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1953 as an 18-year-old bonus baby, the first the franchise ever signed. A June 1958 trade sent him to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Gene Freese and Johnny O'Brien. Blocked for years by shortstop Dick Groat, he hit .403 in September 1960 after Groat's wrist was broken, though a healed Groat took the job back for the World Series, which Pittsburgh won. Once Groat was traded to St. Louis, Schofield finally opened at shortstop three straight years, 1963 through 1965. He then moved on to the Giants, Yankees, Dodgers, Cardinals, Red Sox and Brewers as a utility man, finishing with a .227 career average. He took his nickname from his father, a minor-league shortstop also called Ducky. Springfield, Illinois put three generations in at once, inducting Schofield, his father and his daughter Kim into its Sports Hall of Fame in 1991.
