About Hector Torres

Torres hit .246 with 5 RBI for the 1970 Astros, playing mostly shortstop with six games at second base. His #558 in the fifth series of 1971 Topps already lists him with the Cubs, who acquired him from Houston for Roger Metzger on October 2.

Hector Epitacio Torres Marroquin, born September 16, 1945 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, was a shortstop who played nine major league seasons between 1968 and 1977. Signed by the San Francisco Giants as an amateur free agent in 1962, he reached the majors with the Houston Astros. He then played for the Chicago Cubs, Montreal Expos, Houston again and the San Diego Padres before finishing his career with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1977, when he was the club's first-ever opening day shortstop. He hit the first grand slam in Blue Jays history, off Ron Guidry, on June 27, 1977. Over his career he batted .216 with 18 home runs and 115 RBI, playing mostly shortstop with time at second and third base. After retiring as a player he managed in the minor leagues and in the Mexican League, including a league title with the Florence Blue Jays in 1985.
