The story on this card
Cox shares #559 with Bill Gogolewski and Gary Jones, a three-man Rookie Stars card in the fifth series of the 1971 Topps set, and it is a rookie card for all three. Cox is printed with the California Angels, Gogolewski with the Washington Senators and Jones with the New York Yankees. Terry Cox, a 6-foot-5 right-hander from Odessa, Texas, pitched in three games for the California Angels in September 1970. He worked 2 1/3 innings in relief, struck out three and posted a 3.86 ERA.
Denny McLain's spikes nearly ruptured Gogolewski's Achilles tendon at the start of 1971. He moved into the Senators' rotation on July 6, made 16 straight starts at a 2.67 ERA and threw his first shutout, a four-hitter against the Yankees on September 1. He finished 6-5 with a 2.75 ERA in Washington's last season. His rookie card, #559 in the fifth series, is shared with Terry Cox of the Angels and Gary Jones of the Yankees; he is printed with the Senators. Bill Gogolewski, a right-hander from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, pitched for the Senators, Rangers, Indians and White Sox from 1970 to 1975, finishing 15-24 with a 4.02 ERA before a back injury ended his career.
Out of the Yankees bullpen in 1971, Jones allowed 14 earned runs over 14 innings for a 9.00 ERA. His Rookie Stars card #559, from the fifth series, shares a front with Terry Cox of the Angels and Bill Gogolewski of the Senators, with Jones printed as a Yankee. Left-handed reliever Gary Jones pitched 14 games for the 1970 and 1971 Yankees. He was traded twice on December 2, 1971, from New York to Texas to Cleveland, and finished his career at Triple-A Portland in 1972.
