1971 Topps #521 Leron Lee

About Leron Lee
On June 11, 1971, the Cardinals traded Lee to the San Diego Padres. Between the two clubs he hit .264 with 5 home runs in 104 games, and in San Diego he had a game with three hits including two doubles against Cincinnati. His #521 appears in the fourth series, with St. Louis.
Leron Lee was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who played eight major league seasons, 1969 to 1976, for the Cardinals, Padres, Indians and Dodgers, hitting .250 with 31 home runs in 614 games. The oldest of six children, he graduated from Grant High School in Sacramento with 36 football scholarship offers and instead signed with St. Louis. After the Dodgers he moved to Japan and played eleven seasons for the Lotte Orions, 1977 to 1987. There he was a four-time All-Star and four-time Best Nine winner, led the league in home runs and RBI in his first season and won the 1980 batting title. He held the Japanese career batting average record among players with more than 4,000 at-bats until Norichika Aoki passed him in 2018. His younger brother Leon joined him in Japan in 1978, and Leon's son Derrek Lee reached the majors. Leron later served as Oakland's batting coach in 1989, the year the Athletics won the World Series.
