1971 Topps #735 Mike Shannon

About Mike Shannon
Shannon finished 1970 at .213 with no home runs and 22 RBIs. His final game came on August 12; on August 14 team physician Stan London ruled that his condition had worsened and that he would miss the rest of the season. A return in 1971 was ruled out before spring training, and he joined the front office as assistant director of promotions and sales. His 1971 Topps card, #735, is a sixth-series Cardinals issue. He moved to the radio booth in 1972.
Thomas Michael Shannon grew up in St. Louis and starred in three sports at Christian Brothers College High School before signing with his hometown Cardinals in 1958 for a bonus close to fifty thousand dollars. He debuted in the majors in September 1962 and spent nine seasons with St. Louis, becoming the everyday right fielder in 1964 before shifting to third base in 1967 to open right field for Roger Maris. A rifle-armed defender with a line-drive bat, he reached three World Series with the Cardinals, winning in 1964 and 1967. A kidney ailment ended his playing career during the 1970 season. He then called Cardinals games on the radio for 50 years, through the 2021 season, and was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014.
