About Mike Torrez

The Cardinals traded Torrez to Montreal for pitcher Bob Reynolds on June 15, 1971. He spent part of the season with the Expos' Winnipeg affiliate, then pitched three scoreless innings against St. Louis in September. His combined major league record was 1-2 with a 5.54 ERA in 10 games. Fifth-series Topps #531 still listed the Cardinals.

Mike Torrez pitched for seven major league clubs during an 18-season career, starting 458 of his 494 appearances. The right-hander signed with St. Louis in 1964 for a $20,000 bonus. At Triple-A Tulsa in 1967, he worked with Warren Spahn on his curveball and put together 34 consecutive scoreless innings before reaching the Cardinals that September. He later pitched for Montreal, Baltimore, Oakland, the Yankees, Boston and the Mets. With New York's National League club near the end of his career, he mentored pitchers including Ron Darling and Jesse Orosco. Torrez finished with 185 wins and a 3.96 ERA. He completed 117 games and threw 15 shutouts in 3,044 innings.
