1971 Topps #710 Sonny Siebert

About Sonny Siebert
Siebert hit two home runs off Pat Dobson and pitched a three-hit shutout against the Orioles on September 2, 1971. Four of his wins that year came against Baltimore, the defending champions, and his ERA against them was 0.76. Four of the home runs he hit that year, those two among them, came against Orioles pitching, and Baltimore manager Earl Weaver said, "He just goes out there and beats us with his arm and bat." Topps #710 lists him with the Boston Red Sox.
Wilfred Charles "Sonny" Siebert was a right-handed pitcher born January 14, 1937, in St. Mary, Missouri. A two-sport star at Missouri, he played basketball for three years and helped the Tigers reach the College World Series final in his one season on the baseball team. The Cleveland Indians signed him as an outfielder in 1958, and a minor-league pitching coach later convinced him to switch to the mound. He debuted for Cleveland in 1964 and threw a no-hitter against the Washington Senators on June 10, 1966. He was selected to two All-Star teams, in 1966 and 1971. Traded to Boston in 1969, he went 16-10 for the Red Sox in 1971 while also hitting six home runs. He closed his career with St. Louis, San Diego, and Oakland, finishing 140-114 with a 3.21 ERA over 12 seasons, and later spent years as a minor and major league pitching coach. He was inducted into the University of Missouri Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004 and the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
