About Joe Torre
The Sporting News named Torre its 1971 Major League Player of the Year. In 1972 he again started the All-Star Game at third base, though his average fell to .289 with 11 home runs and 81 RBI. Topps gave him two League Leaders cards: #85 for batting, shared with Atlanta's Ralph Garr and the Cubs' Glenn Beckert, and #87 for RBI, with Pittsburgh's Willie Stargell and Atlanta's Hank Aaron. He also appears on #341 in the new Boyhood Photos subset and on the fourth-series #500.
Joe Torre played catcher, first base and third base for the Braves, Cardinals and Mets before managing five major-league clubs. Raised in Brooklyn, he followed his older brother Frank into the Braves organization in 1959. Frank had advised him to try catching as a route to professional baseball. Torre won the Northern League batting title with a .344 average at Eau Claire in 1960 and reached Milwaukee that September. Over 18 major-league seasons he batted .297 and made nine All-Star teams. He collected 2,342 hits, 252 home runs and 1,185 RBI. His 1971 National League MVP season with St. Louis included major-league leads in average (.363), hits (230) and RBI (137). He became the Mets' player-manager in 1977 and retired as a player that June. Torre managed the Mets, Braves and Cardinals before taking over the Yankees in 1996. New York won six pennants and four World Series under him, with championships in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000. He finished his 29-season managerial career with the Dodgers in 2010 and 2,326 wins. Elected unanimously by the Expansion Era Committee in December 2013, he entered the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a manager in 2014.
