About this card

The story on this card

Fast's 1968 with the Cubs ended on a 5.40 ERA, with eight hits and six earned runs allowed. His 1972 card is #457, the Padres Rookies entry from the fourth series, shared with Derrel Thomas and Mike Ivie. All three are printed with San Diego and each has his rookie card here. Thomas had reached the Padres from the Astros in a December 3, 1971 trade for pitcher Dave Roberts. Left-handed pitcher who appeared in eight games for the 1968 Chicago Cubs and took the loss in his only decision on July 4. He wrote The Missing Cub, about the 1969 Cubs, and worked 30 years as a pastor in Centralia, Washington.

Houston traded Thomas to San Diego on December 3, 1971, in the deal that brought Dave Roberts to the Astros. He started at second base on Opening Day 1972, with a bunt single and a stolen base off Phil Niekro in a 6-5 win. After an error against St. Louis on June 20 he was sent to Triple-A Hawaii for two weeks, and finished the year at .230 in 130 games. His rookie card #457, from the fourth series, is the Padres Rookie Stars card shared with Darcy Fast and Mike Ivie, both also on rookie cards. Switch-hitting utility man who played every position but pitcher across 15 seasons with seven clubs, including the Padres, Giants and Dodgers. First overall pick of the January 1969 draft, and a member of the 1981 World Series champion Dodgers.

Ivie debuted in September 1971 at 19, reaching base 10 times in 19 plate appearances over six games, then walked out of Padres spring training on February 29, 1972, and went home to Georgia. He shares his rookie card #457, a fourth-series Rookie Stars issue, with Darcy Fast and Derrel Thomas. Mike Ivie was the first overall pick of the 1970 draft, taken by San Diego as a catcher. He became a first baseman for the Padres, Giants, Astros and Tigers, hitting .269 with 81 home runs, including 27 for San Francisco in 1979.
