About Mark Belanger

Earl Weaver gave many of the 1972 middle-infield at-bats to newcomer Bobby Grich, and Belanger's own fell to 285. He hit .186 with two home runs and 16 RBI. After the season the Orioles traded second baseman Davey Johnson and installed Grich there, handing Belanger his full-time job back. His Topps card that year, #456 in the fourth series, lists him with the Orioles.

Mark Belanger spent 17 seasons with Baltimore and one with the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning eight Gold Gloves at shortstop and a World Series championship with the 1970 Orioles. His tall, narrow frame earned him the nickname The Blade. Baltimore signed him out of Pittsfield High School in 1962 for $35,000, and he reached the majors as a pinch-runner on August 7, 1965. Across 18 seasons he collected 1,316 hits and batted .228. He served as the Orioles' player representative, took part in the 1981 strike negotiations and worked for the players' association after retiring. Baltimore inducted him into its team Hall of Fame in 1983.
