About Bob Tolan

Tolan hit .283 with 82 RBI and 42 stolen bases in 1972. In the World Series he went 7-for-26 with six RBI, but in the first inning of Game 7 his three-base error on a ball hit by Angel Mangual led to Oakland's first run. He apologized to his teammates in the clubhouse after the 3-2 loss. His #335 is a third-series card in the 1973 Topps set and lists him with Cincinnati.

Bobby Tolan broke into the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1965 as a left-handed hitting outfielder, serving as a reserve on the pennant-winning 1967 and 1968 clubs before the Cardinals traded him and reliever Wayne Granger to the Reds for Vada Pinson. Handed the everyday center field job, Tolan hit .305 in 1969 and followed with a career year in 1970, batting .316 and leading the National League with 57 stolen bases as the Reds won the pennant. An Achilles injury cost him the 1971 season, but he returned in 1972 to win both the Comeback Player of the Year award and the Hutch Award. Later stops took him to the Padres, Phillies and Pirates, and after a season in Japan with the Nankai Hawks he closed his career with San Diego in 1979. He finished with a .265 average, 86 home runs and 497 RBI. In 1,282 games he also stole 193 bases.
